The South African and Portuguese amalgamation is too hot to handle! At Barcelos, HKV, this has been proven right, unerringly, with the Peri-Peri. Coming from the humble beginnings with only a single operation founded in Pretoria, South Africa in 1993, Barcelos now has about 120 outlets around the world with 3 in Delhi. With the first one in Khan Market, second in Hauz Khas and the third opening shortly at Sector 29, Gurgaon, Barcelos is already ruling the roost amongst Indians. Why?! For three reasons : we like it spicy and Peri Peri chicken is scorchingly hot. We like sumptuous portions and they quite generous in that. We like ‘colored’ and they have even dyed their burgers to suit our moods! Do I need say more?!
The Barcelos HKV has an effervescent vibe that arrests you at once. The place exudes a bucolic feel – with its idyllic setting, candescent energy and auburn seating, it gives an impression of a country side bistro.
The artistic finesse reflects on its rustic walls – every pictorial depiction Is reminiscent of Portuguese sagas, people and social mores. Walking through the restaurant, you’d feel you taking a stroll through Portugal, its narrative streets and foregone passé tales.
As I walked in to be a part of an interactive launch, I soaked up the beautiful vibe. Costa Mazzis, CEO – Barcelos and Vir Sanghvi, CEO – Eazydiner talked us through the inception of peri-peri and it’s popularity.
Costa Mazzis stated the onset of the Legend of Barcelos in which a glorious roasted, scarlet-plumed cockerel rises up from the plate of the judge crowing to stand up for the victim only to prove him innocent of the crime. What happened next?! He was acquitted, of-course.
Excited to taste the peri-peri, I had the flamed chicken – succulent and spicy, it’s a must have for all those who swear by the flavor of the valiant. They are also very popular for their black and red burgers – not mixing any artificial tinge or squid blood, they are organically painting the burgers. The Black burger looks classy and tastes equally nice. I had the Mutton-patty Black Burger – the patty could have been a little more sumptuous in size but nonetheless it’s flavorful and filling.
The Chicken Platter and Mezze Platter are also worth trying – good accompaniment with drinks, actually. Barcelos is synonymous with Sangrias – if you like glacé Sangria, this is the place for you. Fratelli Cabernet Sauvignon is filling up the beautiful Sangria goblets here for the connoisseurs.
They also have an array of molecular concoctions – the Kiwi Cooler is refreshing and invigorating. Adding dry ice to creat a dramatic effect is the USP of the place – am sure people will enjoy drinks alongside phenomenal photography.
At Barcelos, you’d never have to worry about the genuinity of the product lest the roasted rooster shall rise up from your plates too.
